The plight of the Asian elephant is grim. They are either put to work hauling logs out of the forest or painfully trained to be entertainers for humans. Both situations create much pain and suffering and a life of labor beyond what is humane.
Recent efforts, particularly those by Sanguadean Lek Chailert at the Elephant Nature Park and Elephant Valley Project in Thailand, are bringing this information to the fore, as well as offering models to reduce harm endured by elephants for the sake of human entertainment.
The plight of elephants in India is similar and thanks to the consistent efforts of Sangita Iyer and the Voice For Asian Elephants and her award winning documentary, Gods in Shackles, their circumstances are also on the road to improvement.
I applaud these sorely needed efforts so much so that a portion of proceeds from all my work is donated to helping Asian elephants through the Tambo Fund. I invite you to join these efforts to protect these majestic beings through donating directly to these organizations yourself through the Abraham Foundation (Choose Elephant Nature Park).
As well you, too, can refuse to support elephant camps and organizations that make their living harming elephants and other beings for the sake of our entertainment. It's a complex situation because so many communities depend upon elephants or their income, but our voices can be heard through our dollar choices. Let's help the families involved make the transition to more humane practices so we can all sleep better at night.
